EDITING

"Fix it in post"

The phrase every musician, film-maker and engineer has heard too many times. While we hate to hear it, we're expected to do it!

Whether you don't have the time, or even the desire, to edit your tracks, it needs to be done. This can often mean the real difference that makes a professional sounding track.

Editing can take a lot of time, and often requires a developed musical and technical ear. There are some common things we do to make a track feel more complete.

Cleaning Tracks

Often when listening to music, we don't think about all of the work that goes into getting the perfect, clean sound that you hear in the final song.. Before the mixing can begin, all noises, clicks, pops, coughs and bumps need to be removed from each audio clip. This is time consuming work, but it makes a world of difference!

Whether in music, film, or any other recorded media, a well edited track sets you apart from others who didn't do the effort.

Time Alignment

Once any undesired sounds have been removed from the audio clips, there is another issue to consider. Musicians are all too familiar with the difficulty in staying in perfect time with one another. They can be close, but very often, it's not perfect.

This is where time alignment comes in. An editor will cut audio clips in specific locations and either move, or warp them to create a cohesive performance. This can become very noticeable, and so the engineer must take precautions to ensure each element still sounds natural.

A good editor knows when to make changes, and when to work around a sound. We strive to keep all recordings natural, and true to the artists' performace!

Vocal Tuning

Melodyne editing

Vocalists work hard to deliver powerful and emotive work during a recording session. Sometimes, the "perfect take" isn't necessarily "perfect." As the most important element of most mixes, we can't settle for that.

When prioritizing the emotion and performance, we can forgive small errors with pitch. These can often be fixed, and thus make our "perfect" vocal take, truly exceptional.

Aside from utilizing tools like AutoTune, which automatically adjust pitch based on a selected key, we start the process by manually tuning individual notes to match the song. This sounds more natural, and may even go unnoticed by the listener.
